Pianist and Music Director Hired at age 23 to conduct the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the youngest conductor of a major opera company in the world at the time. In 1929 became the first American to conduct opera in Italy as the conductor of the Florence Opera House. Returned to Chicago in 1933 and became music director for WGN radio (which at that time broadcast concerts of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra). He often guest conducted the CSO performances or was an on-air commentator. Produced the Chicago Theater of the Air for WGN, which included light opera and musical classics. Often performed with his wife, Marion Claire. |
