6. 231 East Prospect Avenue - An Architectural and Historic Survey of the Camp Meeting Area of Lake Bluff that was completed in 1998. Additional information about the property is available at the Lake Bluff History Museum. 231 East Prospect Avenue The house has always been known as a Frank Lloyd Wright design, produced by American System Bungalow. However, through further investigation, is has been determined that the house is not a Wright built structure. The home was built after May in 1917 for summer rental by William J. Vanderkloot who lived across the street and owned several other properties in the neighborhood. It was sold to two sisters, Ida and Grace McElwain, who also rented it out during the summer season. It replaced an earlier smaller structure that burned in 1909. His son, William Vanderkloot, an engineer, designed this house with stucco siding and a Dutch tile roof and moved here when his father died. William was Village President from 1917-1923. The long narrow windows may have been a later addition. William owned a steel mill in Chicago (Halsted Steel Company). His son, William Jr., studied aviation and used to buzz down Prospect Avenue much to the terror of the local residents. He joined the Canadian Royal Ferry Command in 1939 and flew bombers to England. According to the book, The Man Who Flew Churchill by Bruce West, it was William Jr. who flew Sir Winston Churchill on a secret mission to Moscow in 1943.
