Durable Goods - the Village Market |
Description |
An article in the Chicago Tribune Magazine titled Durable Goods, about the 110+ year old Village Market, which opened in a wood store in 1888 as Rosenthal and Helming's Grocery and Meat Market. The article shows photos of early Village Market. The new owners, Sue and Rob Douglass, renovated the building and filled its shelves with dry, candy, fruits as well as prepared foods. The article features a 1902 view of the building located at 24 East Scranton Avenue, with photos of the old post office on the left as well as a photo of owner Charles Helming standing in front of the building. The Village Market, the tall two story building across the street from the current (2025) Post Office, is the oldest commercial building in the village. Its bricks were said to have come from the Cloes brickyard, located in the Birch Road area. This building was built for the new Helming's Grocery Store and Meat Market, which replaced an earlier frame building at the same location, that had been destroyed by fire, located on northwest corner of Scranton Avenue and Walnut Avenue, today 24 East Scranton Avenue. |
