2. 345 East Prospect - 345 East Prospect Avenue William Vanderkloot home This Parrie Style house was built in 1911 by Adrian Vanderkloot, a Village trustee. It replaced an earlier smaller structure that burned in 1909. His son, William Vanderkloot, an engineer, designed this house with stucco siding and a Dutch tile roof and moved here when his father died. William was Village President from 1917-1923. The long narrow windows may have been a later addition. William owned a steel mill in Chicago (Halsted Steel Company). His son, William Jr., studied aviation and used to buzz down Prospect Avenue much to the terror of the local residents. He joined the Canadian Royal Ferry Command in 1939 and flew bombers to England. According to the book, The Man Who Flew Churchill by Bruce West, it was William Jr. who flew Sir Winston Churchill on a secret mission to Moscow in 1943.
