An article from the Pioneer Press titled Corner Store Owner Quits. After 25 years Bill Hansen, owner of Bill's Food Mart, 24 East Scranton Avenue, closed his store, "due to continued harassment and uncertainty of the future..." Hansen, 49 says the building is going to the one who comes up with the money. The Village Market, the tall two story building across the street from the current (2025) Post Office, is the oldest commercial building in the village. Its bricks were said to have come from the Cloes brickyard, located in the Birch Road area. This building was built for the new Helming's Grocery Store and Meat Market, which replaced an earlier frame building at the same location, that had been destroyed by fire, located on northwest corner of Scranton Avenue and Walnut Avenue, today 24 East Scranton Avenue.

Letter from H. Jensen - Letter from H. Jensen regarding the poor practices Mr. Hansen is using to handle the refuse coming from his business. The refuse has been piling up outside and has spilled onto the ground, which allows for a rat infestation to begin. Mr. Hansen's property was rat proofed and he was given instructions for corrective measure on how to prevent rats in the future, should he not want his permit be denied by the Board of Health.
