She contrasts their warm, happy childhoods in Lake Bluff, the "American way of life," with the childhoods of young men the same age in Germany, raised in a nation preparing for all-out war. Baker argues that these young Americans will go on to fight just as effectively as the Germans in order to preserve the way of life they grew up in.
