My Swedish Grandmother |
Description |
Typed notes from an interview of Harriet Solomonson ( Swalgren ) by her granddaughter Kay Borders. Solomonson came to the United States in 1926 at the age of fifteen, following some of her older siblings. After traveling through Ellis Island, she arrived in Chicago where Harriet met her brother and sister. Harriet worked in Chicago, Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. During the summer of 1926, she went to work with Mrs. Ely who lived on Moffett Road, but Harriet found the country boring and soon returned to the city. She worked for the Amours and later the Thorne families in Lake Forest. She met her future husband Gunnar Swalgren who was working for another Lake Forest family, John R. Thompson. Harriet and Gunnar were married in 1930. |
